PrintCOLUMBIA — Mayor Darwin Hindman received an award for climate protection at the annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami on June 20.
The 2008 Mayors’ Climate Protection outstanding achievement award for small cities, which was co-sponsored by Wal-Mart, focuses on the city’s biogas energy plant. The plant produces electricity by burning natural gas created by the landfill.
“As far as I’m concerned, this is an award for the city,” Hindman said.
The city applied for the award, which the U.S. Conference of Mayors presented to the mayors of four cities with populations of 35,000 to 100,000. The other mayors honored are from Chapel Hill., N.C.; Highland Park, Ill.; and Orland Park, Ill.
Hindman said the city has taken an “innovative, forward-thinking” approach to climate protection.
“It doesn’t mean that we’re through. It doesn’t mean we can stop, we can’t,” Hindman said. “The city is making good progress, in an outstanding way.”
At the Miami conference, the organization of mayors adopted a number of resolutions, including one to promote municipal water by discouraging the use of plastic water bottles by city governments. Hindman said he intends to bring the matter up in Columbia soon, and he’s very much in favor of adopting the plan here.
