PrintCOLUMBIA — The Columbia Independent School is in search of new leadership, according to a release from the school.
Its board of trustees announced Friday that a committee will conduct a national search for a new head of school.
The school has made a commitment to internationally focused education and is looking at a new study abroad option for upper school students, the release stated.
“After considerable discussion, it appears that this is an opportune time for new leadership to move CIS forward along that path, although I share the board’s commitment to developing a Global Study curriculum,” Trent Amond, head of school for the past three years, said in the news release.
Amond will stay to assist with the school’s new study abroad course during the transition period. However, his future role with the school is still being discussed, said John Thompson, chairman of the board of trustees.
The search will start within the next couple of weeks, Thompson said, and the five- to six-person selection committee will be made up of parents, board members and one or two outside professionals, who will add a different perspective.
Thompson said that the school’s international curriculum emphasis will influence the selection criteria to some degree, but the most important factor will be candidate’s commitment to the school’s independent philosophy. He said he isn’t sure how long the search will take but is confident that a new head of school will be chosen soon after the new school year begins.
The search comes during a transitional period for CIS, which was founded in 1996. Starting June 2009, the school will move from its location at Stephens College to its new home at 1801 N. Stadium Blvd., acquiring an additional 28,000 square feet of space in one centralized building to accommodate its expanding program and study body.
