Gearing up for the Fourth

Sunday, June 29, 2008 | 8:06 p.m. CDT
Alyvia Swearingen checks out some fireworks at Bob’s Fireworks on S. Providence Road on Sunday. Swearingen was picking out fireworks with her parents and big brother, preparing for the Fourth of July festivities. The family has recently moved from Illinois, where most fireworks are illegal, and was excited about the large selection. Bob’s Fireworks is open for business through July 10.

Could we PLEASE remember that we are celebrating Independence Day, NOT the 4th of July?

Actually it is illegal to shoot off fireworks in the city, also. Lots of people do it, but you can get in trouble for it.

"America's independence was actually declared by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776.

The document justifying the act of Congress...was adopted on the fourth, as is indicated on the document itself, which is, one supposes, the cause for all the confusion.

As one scholar has observed, what has happened is that the document announcing the event has overshadowed the event itself."

This can be confirmed by many sources.
SO - the photographer is correct - we ARE celebrating the Fourth of July.

...courtesy of your friendly neighborhood librarian! Happy Fourth!
