PrintCOLUMBIA — A man was robbed and assaulted at 11:45 p.m. Monday in central Columbia after two men asked him for cigarettes, according to a release from the Columbia Police Department.
The two suspects approached the 30-year-old man in the area of Pannell Street and Wilkes Boulevard and asked for cigarettes, initially acting friendly, the release stated. As the man reached for his cigarettes, the suspects demanded his wallet.
Thinking it was a joke, the man laughed, and the larger of the two suspects punched him in the face. According to the release, both the suspects then knocked the man to the ground and proceeded to beat and kick him.
During the assault, one of the suspects took the victim’s wallet. They took his cash and fled on foot, the press release stated.
Both suspects are described as white males in their 20s or 30s. The victim described one suspect as 6 feet 2 inches tall and 210 pounds with short, dark hair and a clean-shaven face. He was wearing a white T-shirt and black pants. The other suspect was described as 6 feet tall and 160 pounds with short blonde hair and a clean-shaven face. He was wearing a white flannel shirt and khaki pants.
