Oven fire causes $1,000 in damage

A sheet of cookies left in an oven was the cause of a structure fire Tuesday evening at 301 W. Parkway Drive., according to a release issued by the Columbia Fire Department.

Upon arriving, firefighters discovered light smoke coming from the home and, after entering, discovered flames inside the oven, the release said. The oven had to be forced open because the “self-clean” mode was on and had locked the oven shut. There were no injuries. The smoke damage to the stove and home, owned by Lou and Rachel Mazzocco, is estimated to be $1,000, the release said. The Fire Department will continue to investigate the exact cause of the fire by examining the stove further.
