Woman says she didn't hear 3-year-old open car door, jump out

SPRINGFIELD — A southwest Missouri woman whose 3-year-old daughter fell from her moving car said she didn’t hear what happened because of loud music she was playing.

The child, who suffered minor abrasions in the fall on Monday morning, walked to Cleo Link’s home north of Springfield. Link said he found the girl at his door around 7:30 a.m.

Greene County deputies said the mother told them the music was turned up to calm the child’s behavior because the girl is autistic. The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Sheriff’s Capt. Phil Corcoran said it’s unclear how long the woman drove until noticing the girl had unbuckled her child seat, unlocked the door and jumped out.

Corcoran said the incident does not appear to be a case of child abuse, but the investigation continues.
