COLUMBIA — The Boone County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday morning in the 500 block of East Park Lane in the Sunrise Estates subdivision.

According to a department news release, Warrior K. Universal, 33, of Columbia was shot in the abdomen at about 10:20 a.m. Deputies received a call at about 10:24 a.m. from a neighbor who was trying to help him.

The shooter is described as a black male with a dark complexion, approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall, wearing a black jacket, black pants and black shoes. Universal didn’t know why the suspect shot him, the release stated.

Universal was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

It was later discovered that Universal had an active warrant from St. Louis on the charge of unlawful use of a weapon, according to the department’s release. Deputies will guard Universal at the hospital until he is discharged and sent to Boone County Jail.

Maj. Tom Reddin said Universal spent a short time in surgery for nonlife-threatening injuries. As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Universal was still at the hospital.

Reddin said Universal will probably not be released from the hospital and taken to Boone County Jail until Friday. His bond is listed at $5,000.
