COLUMBIA — On Monday night, the City Council unanimously approved the resubmission of a rezoning request for five acres of the proposed Crosscreek Center located on the east side of U.S. 63 on both sides of Stadium Boulevard.
The request, to rezone the five acres from agricultural to planned commercial, was resubmitted by Stadium 63 Properties after the council defeated the rezoning request March 3.
Columbia ordinances do not allow a resubmission of a failed rezoning petition until after one year unless it is substantially different.
Stadium 63 Properties underwent a mediation agreement with nearby neighborhood associations after the March 3 defeat and resubmitted the petition with changes to the architectural design so that the development would have a sense of unity.
The Planning and Development Department recommended approval of the resubmission because of new, self-imposed conditions that the developer agreed to on the design.
Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala said the council had achieved its purpose of getting more public input on the proposal and recommended approval.
“We aren’t agreeing or disagreeing,” Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Wade said. “We’re deciding whether this piece can restart the process.”
