A severe thunderstorm watch was posted until 9 p.m. Tuesday for large part of Central Missouri, including Columbia and Boone County. A flash flood watch is also in effect for Columbia and Jefferson City through Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service put 31 Missouri counties, including Boone, on alert for the possibility of severe thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce hail, strong winds and brief, heavy downpours, according to the Weather Service office in St. Louis.

Heavy rain that could cause flash flooding was also possible as a slow-moving cold front makes its way toward Central Missouri, according to the Weather Service.

Weather Service radar at mid-afternoon indicated widespread thunderstorms developing in west-central Missouri and east-central Kansas. There were also a few clusters of storms north and south of Columbia.

The latest watches and warnings, along with detailed forecast information, can be found at the National Weather Service.
