HANNIBAL — Just as Hannibal is getting back to normal after near-record flooding on the Mississippi River, the town is now recovering from a flash flood.
It happened Tuesday afternoon. Emergency Management director John Hark says 3 to 4 inches of rain fell in about 40 minutes, causing creeks to overflow and leaving water standing on many streets.
The storm downed a power line, caused damage to vehicles and frayed nerves around the northeast Missouri community.
The flash flood came the same day the town removed flood gates from the riverfront area, now that the Mississippi is receding. The riverfront is still messy with debris and mud, so residents and visitors are being asked to stay away until cleanup is complete.
