KANSAS CITY — Kansas City police have identified a 55-year-old gunman whom officers fatally shot after he allegedly fired a rifle at passing vehicles in Swope Park.

Capt. Rich Lockhart said police killed Reginald McGee, of Kansas City, after he crashed his vehicle into a tree and began shooting at passing cars.

According to police, an off-duty officer approached McGee after seeing him walking with a rifle. Police say she ordered him to drop his weapon, but McGee refused and instead started firing at passing vehicles.

Three officers responded to the off-duty officer’s call for help. Lockhart said the three officers shot McGee after he pointed his gun at them.

Police said McGee hit at least three vehicles with gunfire. The motive is unclear.
