KANSAS CITY — Police fatally shot a man after he wrecked his car in a popular city park and began shooting at passing vehicles with a rifle.

Police Capt. Rich Lockhart said the 52-year-old lost control of his vehicle on a road running through Swope Park and struck a tree.

An off-duty officer who saw the man walking with a rifle got out of her car and approached the man. She ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused and kept walking, then he started firing at passing vehicles. Police say the man hit at least three vehicles with gunfire.

Three officers approached the man and ordered him to surrender, but he pointed his gun at them, Lockhart said. The officers shot the man, hitting him several times. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
