ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis-area Roman Catholic priest pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of second-degree assault while driving drunk in May.

Prosecutors allege that John Brockland crashed his car into another vehicle after running through a flashing red light in suburban St. Louis.

He is currently pastor at Sts. Joachim and Ann Church in St. Charles.

The 43-year-old was arraigned Tuesday. He’ll return to court later this month to set a tentative trial date.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle Brockland hit was injured and continues to recover.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis says its prayers for a full recovery are with the injured driver and family.

It declined to comment further.
