Man stabbed near Business Loop, approaches police at traffic stop

COLUMBIA — A 43-year-old man was cut or stabbed in the neck Wednesday night, Sergeant Ken Hammond of the Columbia Police Department said.

The man approached the officers while they conducting a traffic stop at the Breaktime store on Business Loop 70 East, Hammond said, but the wound seemed to have been from an unknown weapon.

Officers said there was a “substantial amount of blood,” and a trail of blood indicated that he had come from Grand Avenue before reaching Business Loop 70 East, Hammond said.

The victim was uncooperative and refused to provide information about what happened to him, Hammond said. Police have not determined the location of the incident or the identity of any other people involved.

The victim was transported to University Hospital by ambulance; the injury did not seem to be life threatening.

There was no connection between the victim and the traffic stop, Hammond said.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday, the victim was waiting in the Columbia police station lobby to speak to a detective. Hammond said the man told the investigator that he would not cooperate in the investigation, and he was only at the station to retrieve personal property obtained the previous night. He also wasn’t cooperative with medical staff who were attempting to treat him, Hammond said.
