PrintCOLUMBIA — Over the past few months, Stephens Lake Park has received $23,500 in donations, bringing it ever-closer to the ideal outlined in the park’s master plan.
The Cosmopolitan International Luncheon Club of Columbia contributed $12,500 for Riechmann Pavilion as the third installment of a $50,000 donation spread over four annual payments. The pavilion has already been completed.
Ed Petersheim donated $10,000 for the construction of a second waterfall at the park, and the park also received an additional $1,000 for the planting of Memorial/Heritage trees.
Stephens Lake Park has two waterfalls planned for the north side of the park along the lake trail, and now, thanks in part to Petersheim, both of them are funded. The first waterfall was paid for by the Nall family.
“I made a donation in memory of a good friend of mine,” Petersheim said. “She always liked Stephens Lake Park, and I thought it would be a good thing to do.”
Neither waterfall has been built, but construction for both should begin in about two weeks, Mike Snyder, city of Columbia park planner, said. He estimated that although structural work on the waterfalls should take about six to eight weeks to complete, the plumbing may take longer, meaning water probably won’t be flowing immediately.
There are still several opportunities for donations, but most of the projects planned for the park are funded.
“We have the waterfalls and a stage for our amphitheater (left to build),” Snyder said. “That will complete our funded development.”
