COLUMBIA — MU Provost Brian Foster has named Rose Porter, dean of the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, as the interim dean of the MU College of Education, MU spokesman Christian Basi said.

“I’m pleased to be able to help during this transition period,” Porter said in an MU news release. “I’m looking forward to continuing the wonderful collaboration that the College of Education has developed across campus.”

Porter will take over from Carolyn Herrington, who announced her plans to retire in June.

Porter has been with the university for 29 years and earned her doctorate in higher education administration from MU after receiving her bachelor’s degree in nursing and her master’s degree in nursing service administration from the University of Iowa.

“She has the track record, is an alumna of the college and is a perfect fit for the position,” Foster said in the release.

Porter had planned to leave her position in the School of Nursing this fall and will be replaced with Judith Fitzgerald Miller from Marquette University, Basi said.

Foster will begin a national search for Herrington’s permanent replacement sometime in September. Porter said she will begin her retirement after a new dean is found. Porter said that searches for permanent deans can take up to a year.
