PrintCOLUMBIA — Since Scott Sutherland moved his family to Columbia three years ago from Atlanta, he has been trying to integrate himself into the community. As senior minister for the Forum Christian Church, Sutherland was able to encourage not only his family to participate in volunteering for the Show-Me State Games, but the church as well.
“Our church is actually supplying a good number of volunteers this year,” Sutherland said.

People were notified to help through the church’s Web site and through an electronic newsletter that members can receive. Forum Christian Church member Marlowe Schlegel was the coordinator for the church’s efforts. There was a good response when reaching out for volunteers and 15 members will represent the church during the games, he said.
Help out the largest state games in the country is special to Schlegel and perfect for Sutherland’s family and church to become a part of a larger picture, Schlegel said. “It means to be a part of the community. A few hours of volunteering is a great thing.”
Schlegel volunteered Saturday to help with the wrestling competition while Sutherland spent his time helping at the tennis courts.
“That’s what neat about volunteering, is they pair you up with the sport you like most,” Schlegel said.
Two of Sutherland’s five children volunteered for the Show-Me State Games and both helped with soccer.
“They play in soccer themselves so they see the importance of doing a good job to make events happen,” Sutherland said.
This was the church’s first effort and Schlegel said he is already thinking ahead to next year.
“This is good for all of us and good for our community. We have a caring community that wants to serve,” Schlegel said.
