Ultimate Frisbee players ran and threw Frisbee discs on fields marked off by orange cones on Hinkson Creek Fields on Saturday.
On one of the fields, two teams named Dumbledore’s Army and the BoCoMo Bandits played in the open division with the score remaining close throughout the game.
The teams wore makeshift uniforms of either white shirts or dark colored shirts and cleats and talked to each other throughout the game frequently asking each other about the score. Several players also sported sunglasses, baseball hats, and sweatbands due to the bright sun.
Chuck Clearly, a player for Dumbledore’s Army from Ames, Iowa, said, “My favorite part about Ultimate is that most people don’t consider it a sport, so it allows more creativity.”
The team formed from a group a friends. About a third are from Columbia. The players go to several different colleges across the U.S. including Iowa State University, Washington University and Vanderbilt University
BoCoMo Bandits captain John Borgmeyer says his team got started as a group of players and friends, mostly from around Columbia, who wanted to play in the Show-Me State Games.
John Borgmeyer of Jefferson City and captain of the Bandits said he enjoyed, “The action of the game, it’s just players running and throwing the Frisbee, the dynamics.”
Borgmeyer got involved in the sport when he was in college at the University of Missouri. He participates in the Columbia summer ultimate Frisbee league and emphasized that anyone interested should get involved in the Columbia ultimate Frisbee community.
Teams played several games on Saturday and will continue today at Hinkson Creek Fields.
