GALESBURG, Ill.  — Authorities say a man accused of eight murders in Illinois and Missouri allegedly attempted to assault another jail inmate.

Knox County Sheriff David Clague says Nicholas Sheley is suspected of unscrewing a railing from his cell in the county jail, taking it to the next cell and swinging it at another inmate Sunday morning.

He says a report has been sent to the Knox County state’s attorney’s office, which will determine if charges will be filed.

Sheley and the other inmate have been put on 72-hour lockdown.

The 28-year-old Sheley is suspected of bludgeoning eight people to death in late June before he was captured outside a bar near St. Louis.
