PrintCOLUMBIA — The Boone County Sheriff's Department arrested two people on charges of possession and trafficking of a controlled substance at a sobriety checkpoint early Saturday morning, according to a news release from the department.
At about 1 a.m., Demond Williams, 25, was stopped at the checkpoint and arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance while driving, trafficking or attempting to traffic illegal drugs and driving with a suspended license. During a search, officers found 8 grams of individually packaged rocks of crack cocaine and one ecstasy tablet in Williams' possession, the release said.
The passenger of the car, Trimayne D. Allen, was in possession of an unspecified number of ecstasy tablets and was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, according to the release. The car is registered in Kansas.
During the scheduled sobriety checkpoint, six other individuals were arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The checkpoint was a cooperative effort between the Sheriff's Department and the Hallsville and Columbia police departments.
"It was successful because we got six individuals off the roads, and hopefully it will make an impression, and they won't do it again," said Sgt. Scott M. Ewing of the Sheriff's Department.
Police officers and sheriff's deputies checked 318 vehicles between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. at the checkpoint, which was located on Shalimar Drive at Missouri 763, the release said. The checkpoint was the second of three the department will hold between May and September, funded by a state grant.
According to the release, additional arrests included seven for driving with a suspended or revoked license, one for operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, one for failure to comply with ignition interlock restriction, and three for possession of a controlled substance. They also issued citations for driving without insurance, failure to register and one citation for not wearing a seat belt.
