PrintCOLUMBIA — For the fifth year, Columbia will be one of 107 Missouri cities opting out of the state's tax-free weekend coming up Friday through Sunday.
For shoppers, that means they still will be able to purchase back-to-school items - clothing, personal computers and school supplies - with a reduced tax.
By opting out, Columbia chooses to continue to collect local sales tax.
However, the state sales tax, which is about 4.2 percent , will be waived on purchases made this weekend.
This will be the fifth year that Missouri has participated in a sales tax holiday.
Surrounding cities also opting out are Ashland, Boonville, California, Fayette, Holts Summit, Jefferson City and Moberly.

Ya we could not have or give the citizens a well deserved tax break of any kind with all of the gas crunch going on now could we. Didn't you know that our city officials need all of that tax money to allow for those oh so much needed raises but all the while making budget cuts that will effect peoples quality of life itself.
