IRONTON — A Humane Society rescue ranch is caring for a horse that officials say was cruelly dragged behind a four-wheeler this week in Iron County.
The Humane Society said Friday a horse was dragged more than 200 feet on gravel and pavement near Ironton in southeast Missouri.
The 2-year-old male horse is a bay fox trotter that is being called Mason. It was treated by a veterinarian for exposed tissue, muscle and bone injuries on his side. He was to be brought to the Humane Society of Missouri's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union for extended care.
Ranch officials say the horse's injuries are severe but he is expected to survive.
They said a suspect is in custody, but the Iron County sheriff and prosecutor did not immediately return phone calls for comment.
