COLUMBIA — Tim Kaine: Governor of Virginia, short-list candidate for vice presidential nominee and ... MU Summer Welcome leader? Kaine's name made national news this week as a person of interest in Barack Obama's search for a running mate. Thirty-one years ago this summer, the governor was at MU, helping incoming freshman experience their first taste of college life.

Kaine, a Minnesota native, grew up in Kansas City. He enrolled at MU in 1976 and graduated in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in economics. In addition to being a Summer Welcome leader in 1977, Kaine was active in other student organizations, including national honor society Omicron Delta Kappa and SIMA, a campus organization promoting friendship, according to the 1978 and ‘79 Savitar.
