COLUMBIA - This fall, the MU department of athletics is encouraging Mizzou football fans to wear gold to every game, at home and away. The only exception is for the Blackout game, when supporters traditionally sport black apparel, Nov. 8 against Kansas State.
Tom Lewis, media relations associate for MU athletics, said that a sea of gold decorating the sidelines of Memorial Stadium will help the appearance of MU football.
"With all MU fans wearing gold consistently to games, it gives a better presentation to a national audience," Lewis said.
Gold rush T-shirts are now on sale for the State Farm Arch Rivalry game against Illinois at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on Aug. 30. They cost $20.
Steve Dillard, the vice president of Tiger Spirit, said that he has changed the proportion of shirt colors he is stocking for the 2008 season. He said he isn't ordering more shirts overall, just more gold ones. Dillard said this year, 40 percent of the MU shirts he pre-ordered were gold.
Fans are going to shop regardless, Dillard said, but they have a heightened excitement to wear gold this year, so they are probably going to buy gold shirts rather than black, white or gray. He said that fans attending football games will be more inclined to buy gilded shirts.
"Fans are going to buy gold if they don't have gold," Dillard said.
Adult short-sleeved T-shirts at Tiger Spirit cost $13.99 to $18.99.
