ST. LOUIS - A series of problems caused a tram cable to snap at the Gateway Arch last summer.
That's according to an engineering report obtained by the St. Louis-Post Dispatch through a Freedom of Information Act request. Details were published on Friday.
The braided steel cable dropped more than 500 feet on July 21, 2007, knocking out power for two hours and forcing a nighttime evacuation. The south tram was shut down for eight months, though the north tram continued operating.
The engineering report was performed by Pennsylvania-based Maida Engineering. It blamed workmanship of the National Park Service and outside contractors who worked on the tram system.
The Post-Dispatch says problems included the use of the wrong-sized parts and improper installation.
