Apartment fire causes $500 in damage

COLUMBIA — An accidental fire occurred in a Columbia apartment shortly after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday while Brenda Warren, the apartment occupant's mother, was cooking pig's feet.

Fire investigators said the cause of the fire was undetermined.

The fire occurred at 2811 Mexico Gravel Road, apartment C. The apartment is rented to Trenda Walker, who was not home at the time. Walker's children and her mother were both in the apartment at the time of the fire, according to a news release.

On arrival, Columbia firefighters saw no smoke outside the apartment. However, when they entered, they found the stove smoking and small flames coming from a burner, according to the news release. The fire was put out with the use of a dry chemical extinguisher.

There were no injuries, but the fire $500 in damage to the stove, according to the news release.
