SPRINGFIELD —  The company that publishes The Springfield News-Leader and its Web site said five employees will be laid off as part of a plan by its corporate owner to eliminate 1,000 jobs nationwide.

Tom Bookstaver, president and publisher of The News-Leader Media Group, said Friday the newspaper and the News-Leader.com Web site together have 312 employees.

Gannett Co., the nation's largest newspaper publishing company, announced plans Thursday to eliminate 1,000 jobs, including 600 layoffs, across its newspaper operations. The company said 400 jobs would be eliminated through attrition and leaving vacant posts unfilled.

New jobs coming to Springfield that were recently announced are not affected. The News-Leader will hire about 53 people to provide centralized credit and collections for Gannett.
