JEFFERSON CITY— A state review of safety at Missouri's public schools finds problems with discipline policies, emergency planning, building security and Internet safety.
The audit released Tuesday also calls for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to take a greater role in making sure Missouri's more than 500 school districts follow state school safety laws.
One of the problems cited involved emergency drills. For example, auditors found that only nine of the 25 school districts reviewed conducted regular drills for an intruder in the building. Eight of the schools did not hold periodic drills for environmental hazards.
The audit also recommended that schools develop better Internet safety training programs for students.
