ST. LOUIS - The Army Corps of Engineers has completed emergency dredging operations on the upper Mississippi River north of Winfield.
The corps said dredging began Saturday near Hamburg, Ill., and river traffic needed to move more slowly while work was done to maintain a safe navigation channel.
All U.S. Coast Guard restrictions on the river have been lifted. Dredging will next take place near where the Mississippi meets the Illinois River.
Recent flooding led to more sediment being carried along by the river or lifted up from the bottom of the river, prompting some vessels to be grounded and the need for dredging.
