Columbia Police arrested a juvenile after witnesses saw him brandish a handgun during a fight near Hickman High School at the conclusion of a football jamboree on Friday night, a Columbia Police Department news release said.
The juvenile suspect was arrested on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon and was detained by the Missouri Division of Youth Services, the release said.
At about 8:37 p.m., officers working the game were told of a large disturbance in the parking lot, the release said. The officers then saw a crowd of about 300 people running in various directions, the release said. Some in the crowd told officers that a young man had a gun and had brandished it at another juvenile.
Witnesses told police that the juvenile pulled out a gun and pointed it at another juvenile during a confrontation and then put the gun back in his waistband. The juvenile with the gun then was chased by the juvenile suspect involved in the altercation and a second juvenile. During the chase, the gun fell out of the juvenile's pants and was picked up by an unknown female in the crowd, the release said.
After losing the gun, the three subjects resumed their fight.
At 8:44 p.m., officers detained the subject who had brandished the gun on the northeast side of the school. Medical personnel examined the young man and released him without treatment.
The other two juveniles involved in the fight were detained by police and released to their guardians.
Missourian reporters Joshua A. Bickel and Chad Day contributed to this report.

What is with all of this do we now have to have "Metal Detectors" bat our schools games the community enjoys just because parents cannot properly raise their children with some sense of decent values to function in society these days? I am just outraged as a citizen that we have parents in our community who would allow their children to exhibit this kind of behavior. So no longer are our streets, schools, outdoor activities nor our areas of entertainment safe as they used to be.
If it means going the ways of the hard core to ensure the security of our citizens at any and all events then fine bring on the police, the sheriffs, the dogs, metal detectors and whatever else may be required to ensure we as citizens can enjoy all and any recreational activity in our city in peace and security.
If certain classes of citizens want to be ignorant and careless then fine "let lose the hounds" to maintain our security and if that means "profiling" then so be it to maintain the safe environment all citizens of Columbia are entitled to!
