CAMPBELL — A man from the Missouri Bootheel is dead, apparently after being hit by a train.

The victim is 44-year-old Keith Skaggs of Campbell. His body was found early Tuesday near railroad tracks.

Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder says it is believed a train struck and killed Skaggs. Union Pacific began an investigation after being contacted by Campbell police.

A spokesman for Union Pacific said members of a crew thought they saw something on the tracks between 3:15 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, but thought it was a deer.

Authorities don't know if Skaggs' death was an accident or intentional.
