ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said it has eliminated 18 jobs as it copes with declining advertising revenue and increasing newsprint costs.

The job cuts, announced Thursday, are in human resources, production and newsroom management.

"Like many businesses across the country, we continue to feel the economic challenges, including consecutive newsprint increases over the past 13 months," Kevin Mowbray, the newspaper's publisher, said in a statement.

He said the paper would "continue to provide quality products and services for our audience, which continues to grow in print and online."

The Post-Dispatch employed approximately 1,100 people as of Sept. 30. In March, the newspaper said it would eliminate 31 positions. None were in the newsroom.

Last August, the newspaper extended offers of voluntary early retirement. About 60 staffers accepted the offer, including reporters, photographers, editors, columnists and production workers.
