Gov. Blunt mobilizes more troops to assist with hurricane relief

JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Matt Blunt is mobilizing another 700 Missouri National Guard members to help support Louisiana's hurricane relief efforts.

The troops mobilized Monday. They will join the more than 600 troops already mobilized, bringing to 1,300 the number of Missouri National Guard members called on to assist with relief efforts.

Hurricane Gustav hit around 9:30 a.m. Monday about 72 miles southwest of New Orleans.

Blunt's office said the latest units are scheduled to leave for Louisiana on Tuesday. The units mobilized Monday include the 203rd Engineer Battalion and Forward Support Company, Joplin; 1141st Engineer Company, Kansas City; 294th Engineer Company, Carthage and Anderson; 220th Engineer Company, Festus; 880th Haul Team, Perryville; 311th Brigade Support Battalion, Lexington; and the 548th Transportation Company, Trenton.
