ST. LOUIS — The Saint Louis Symphony has received a $5 million gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

The donor has said the money should be used in specific areas, including operating expenses and focus on audience development and increasing capacity.

The symphony's executive director Fred Bronstein called the gift an endorsement of the orchestra's history of providing great music for 128 years.

Serious financial problems this decade have plagued the orchestra, which put tight budget measures in place and launched a successful endowment campaign.
