COLUMBIA - The interfaith group Care for Creation is gathering on Sunday afternoon to eat ice cream made with solar power and to discuss how the faith community can properly steward the earth. The group's current participants, which include members of mainline denominations as well as Muslims and Jews, welcome all interested members of the faith community to attend.
"Through this event, we hope to help people identify other members of the faith community working on similar ideals to build a larger movement to address climate change," Monta Welch, Columbia Climate Change Coalition director, said. Welch also said that Care for Creation aims "to educate and motivate individuals and ultimately lead them to spread these ideals to the larger community."
The event will feature a solar electric demonstration, an ice cream social and discussion of the group's vision and plans for the future. It begins at 2:30 p.m. at Rock Bridge Christian Church, 301 W. Green Meadows Road.
"As a Christian, it's about stewardship, taking care of what God has given us," said First Baptist Church pastor John Baker. "It is my hope that individuals will learn more, get involved and live as better trustees locally and globally."
