WOOD RIVER, Ill. - A southern Illinois man is in custody after telling police he shot his wife to death because he thought she was a burglar.

The man, who has not been criminally charged, is in custody at the Wood River Police Department.

Police say he told officers he shot his 45-year-old wife as she was entering their Wood River home Wednesday night because he thought she was breaking in. He called 911 after the shooting and explained what he'd done.

Police say they'll give information about possible criminal charges to Madison County prosecutors Friday.
