Kansas City police shoot sword-wielding man

KANSAS CITY — Two Kansas City police officers shot and killed a man they said swung a sword at them.

A police spokesman said the officers responded to an early Sunday morning call about a person yelling in the street. When they arrived, they say the man was standing in the street and holding an unknown object. They later determined it was a sword.

The officers chased the man on foot, and when they tried to arrest him, they said the suspect tried to hit them with the sword.

The officers shot the suspect, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two officers, both 1½-year veterans of the department, are on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
