Swoboda died Saturday at age 69. He was shot twice in the head in February when disgruntled resident Charles "Cookie" Thornton burst into a city council meeting and began firing. Two police officers, two council members and the public works director died in the rampage. Police shot and killed Thornton.
Swoboda appeared to be improving before recent setbacks. Kirkwood's current mayor, Arthur McDonnell, said Swoboda's death was due in part to the shooting and in part to his struggle with cancer.
