CHAFFEE - Once again, concern about a lack of chlorine in the water system for the southeast Missouri town of Chaffee is prompting a state-mandated boil order.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources issued the order Monday after a state inspector discovered the problem.
Chaffee's water concerns began last month when public works director Eric Hicks resigned, citing stress and harassment from elected officials. Later in August, a public works employee discovered a malfunctioning chlorinator at the water plant and the air filling with chlorine gas. He was treated at a hospital.
Soon after that, the state determined the water system lacked chlorine, prompting a 10-day boil order that was lifted Thursday.
Chlorine is added to water supplies to kill disease-causing bacteria.
