COLUMBIA - There's no reason to remind Darryn Hill that the last three Rock Bridge quarterbacks have earned NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision scholarships. There's also no reason to remind him that there is a lot of pressure on him to help the Bruins improve upon last year's 1-9 record.
Hill, a left-handed junior who beat out sophomores Mark Pickerel and Shawn Rush for the Bruins' starting quarterback position, is concentrated on leading the Bruins to victory.
"My main focus is to win," Hill said. "I want the team to win. There's no pressure."
The Bruins (1-1, 0-0) host McCluer North (0-2, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. The North Stars have been outscored 64-34 this season. Their quarterback, Ralph Watson, accounts for all four of their touchdowns, two rushing and two passing.
Hill says the trouble for the Bruins last year was their mindset, but he said this year's team should be better.
"We weren't focused (last season)," he said. "Everyone was thinking about college. We don't care about that. We just want to play ball."
Bruins' head coach A.J. Ofodile is pleased with how Hill has performed so far.
"He's done everything we've asked of him," Ofodile said. "He's a good ball handler. He does a good job leading the offense. We just need him to keep doing what he's doing."
Hill credits his early success to work with Ofodile and Skip Stitzell, who runs a quarterback development clinic in Fayette.
Hill has thrown for 250 yards in Rock Bridge's first two games. He has also been the consummate teammate.
When not taking reps on the practice field, Hill can be seen on the sideline chatting with teammates.
"He's a character person," Ofodile said. "He's demonstrated that time and time again."
Hill said he also has a team-first mentality.
"There are no strengths or weaknesses," Hill said when asked to describe himself as a quarterback. "Whenever I have something I'm not good at, my boys (teammates) are going to pick me up. And I'll do the same for them. I just want to help out my team."
