Bond pushes intelligence reform in Congress

WASHINGTON — Sen. Kit Bond is calling on Congress to reform its oversight of the intelligence community by creating a single panel in charge of funding intelligence programs.
The Missouri Republican says the change is needed to curb wasteful spending on classified programs of dubious value.
Bond’s resolution would adopt a key recommendation of the commission that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks, which called congressional intelligence oversight “dysfunctional.”
Similar reform efforts have met resistance in the past because lawmakers on other committees are reluctant to give up their authority over intelligence matters.
Bond acknowledges it will be tough to get his resolution through before the end of the year.
Bond is a Republican leader on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
