SPRINGFIELD — A Drury University freshman suffered alcohol poisoning after downing a near-lethal amount at a party apparently held in response to a crackdown on underage drinking.
The party took place Saturday night in Stone County on "Bid Day," when Drury students who want to join fraternities learn if they have been accepted. The school confined this year's event to the campus quad.
Drury hired 17 off-duty Springfield police officers to help prevent underage drinking. But by the time law officers arrived, students had left for the off-campus parties.
Authorities said the hospitalized student's blood-alcohol level was .395. He is listed in stable condition.
Stone County deputies said four underage students were cited for possessing alcohol, and other charges could be filed.
