CAPE GIRARDEAU — Thorngate Ltd. plans to eliminate its sewing department in Cape Girardeau, a move that will leave about 250 workers without jobs.

The facility manufactures high-end men's clothing. Mitch Robinson, an industrial development director, tells the Southeast Missourian newspaper that training assistance will be offered to the displaced workers.

It is the second setback for the plant in the past month. In mid-August, the plant announced it was cutting back the work week of its 335 employees to three days from five because of declining sales and a struggling economy.

Mayor Jay Knudtson says given the economy, the news does not come as a complete surprise.

Knudtson says the layoffs should happen in November.

Thorngate did not comment to the newspaper.
