Churches to host vigil for those affected by Warren chapel closure

COLUMBIA - African-American churches in Columbia and the surrounding area are sponsoring a prayer vigil and worship service at 7 p.m. Friday on behalf of those affected by events surrounding the closure of the Warren Funeral Chapel, a news release stated.

On July 25, the Warren Funeral Chapel was closed indefinitely after Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed a lawsuit citing several health code violations, including improperly storing bodies.

The services are free and open to the public and will be held at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 407 E. Broadway, according to the release, which was signed by the Rev. Clyde Ruffin of Second Missionary Baptist Church, and the Rev. David Ballenger of Log Providence Baptist Church.

The 24-hour prayer vigil will end at 7 p.m. Saturday and will be followed by the worship service and a dinner. The service will include several worship music ensembles from Columbia.

Area pastors and ministers will be available for individual prayer and counseling.
