Governor says state vehicle travel costs down $10 million

JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Matt Blunt says the state has saved about $10 million in vehicle travel costs in the past three years.

In 2005, Blunt's administration issued a new travel policy. It requires employees to use state vehicles or rental cars whenever they are cheaper than reimbursing employees for using their personal vehicles.

Blunt says the state's mileage reimbursement costs have declined by about 25 percent in the past three years. He says that has more than offset the corresponding increase in costs for state vehicles and rental cars.

The state's mileage reimbursement rate is 47.5 cents. Blunt says it typically costs about 35 cents a mile for rental vehicles and 28 cents a mile when employees use a state-owned car.
