COLUMBIA — Columbia Second Chance, a no-kill animal adoption center, is hosting Paws in the Park on Saturday to raise money to cover its $12,000 rent for 2009.
The event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park, will include a 5K run/walk, a silent auction and vendor booths. Pet owners can also have their cats and dogs microchipped by the Central Missouri Humane Society for a small fee.
Bidding for silent auction items, which include a coupon for three Chipotle burritos and a ‘Got Poop?' T-shirt from Scoop-n-Doo, has already begun on the Columbia Second Chance Web site, columbia2ndchance.org.
Those planning to participate in the 5K run/walk can register online for $25.
Animals will also be available for adoption at the event. Laurie Pancoast, a Columbia Second Chance volunteer, estimates that 10 to 15 cats and dogs looking for homes will be at Stephens Lake Park.
Second Chance’s adoption book, which includes all the animals from the Dog Ranch and Catty Shack, locations where the adoption center houses animals it can't fit in the main location at 205 E. Ash St., will also be available for potential new pet owners.
“Some animals do better at events like this,” Pancoast said.
