Ex-collector convicted in federal court

ST. LOUIS — A former county collector could face up to five years in prison after being convicted of federal tax evasion charges.

Danny Wayne Gladden was convicted late Thursday after a four-day trial. U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway says the charges came because Gladden failed to report more than $300,000 of funds he embezzled when he served as Crawford County collector.

Sentencing will be Dec. 12.

In April, Gladden was found guilty of 22 counts of felony stealing. He is 56 and lives in Steelville.

Gladden was originally arrested in 2005 after it was discovered that thousands of dollars were missing from county coffers. He was first elected county collector in 1991 and resigned shortly after his arrest.
