KANSAS CITY — A Texas woman is jailed in suburban Kansas City on charges in the smothering death of her 6-week-old son.

Police in Lee's Summit said Thursday that 29-year-old Sweet Cherry Ann Halliburton told them she killed her son. Investigators said she told them late Tuesday that she had pulled her car off of Interstate 435 near Raytown and smothered the infant on her lap.

Investigators said Halliburton previously had two babies die of what was ruled as sudden infant death syndrome, and that they are also probing those deaths.

Police in Fort Worth, Texas, said a Halliburton child died of SIDS in that city last year. Missouri investigators say they believe the other SIDS death occurred in South Dakota.

Ted Hunt, assistant Jackson County prosecutor, said SIDS cases are difficult to distinguish from smothering deaths.
