PrintResidents of Columbia's Old Southwest Neighborhood Association have asked the GetAbout Columbia group for a preliminary design and cost estimate on an alternative option for a possible connector to the MKT Trail.
The association, which met recently at the Columbia Public Library, agreed to make a request for the information about the Lathrop Road choice for the MKT Trail connector, said Steve Kullman, a member of the neighborhood association. The South Garth Avenue connector already has a preliminary design, Kullman said.
At a previous meeting, those in attendance selected a subgroup to research the eight options available for potential connectors, said John Lory, who led the library meeting. After some discussion, the 25 or so residents at the recent meeting narrowed the conversation down to two options: the Lathrop Road and South Garth Avenue choices.
The Lathrop Road option would start when Lathrop Road ends after an intersection with Garth Avenue. The city would have to relocate a tennis court, and the connecting trail would cut through trees and the property of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
The South Garth Avenue choice is scheduled to go along South Garth Avenue and connect with the MKT Trail.
In other GetAbout Columbia news, a public hearing about the County House Branch Trail will be held during the Columbia City Council meeting, 7 p.m., Oct. 6, 701 E. Broadway.
The County House Branch Trail has been proposed to start at the intersection of Stadium Boulevard and College Park Drive and end at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area.
Park Development Superintendent Steve Saitta said the City Council could approve the purchase of the five easements needed for the trail, three owned by the same person. The council could also allow the Purchasing Department to seek bids for the construction of the trail.
Construction is scheduled to begin on the trail in November 2009. The estimated total cost of the trail is $774,880.
