Democrats say Hulshof should return $100,000 donation

KANSAS CITY — A school-choice advocate's $100,000 donation to Republican Rep. Kenny Hulshof's gubernatorial campaign is being called into question by Democrats.

The gift from retired mutual fund magnate Rex Sinquefield came on the same day Hulshof announced an urban school reform plan. It included taxpayer subsidies for private school tuition.

Hulshof spokesman Scott Baker said there's no connection between Sinquefield's contribution on Tuesday and Hulshof's announcement, which had been set for the previous day.

Baker accused Democrats of trying to shift attention from Democratic candidate Jay Nixon's record of not addressing troubled schools in Missouri's largest cities.

Democrats say Hulshof should return the donation. They say Sinquefield is trying to dismantle public school funding.
